Tattoo Aftercare

Tattoo Aftercare Instructions

Tattoo Avenue – Tucson, Arizona

Proper tattoo aftercare is essential for keeping your new tattoo looking bold, clean, and vibrant for years to come. Following the correct healing process will help prevent infection, protect the detail of the tattoo, and ensure the best possible results.

At our tattoo shop in Tucson, artists provide professional aftercare guidance for every tattoo. Below are the recommended healing instructions depending on the bandaging method used by your artist

.

Tattoo Healing Basics

A fresh tattoo is essentially a small wound in the skin, and proper care during the healing process is extremely important. Most tattoos take 2–3 weeks for the outer layer of skin to heal, while the deeper layers can take 4–6 weeks to fully settle.

During the healing process you may experience:

• Mild redness

• Slight swelling

• Light scabbing or peeling

• Mild itching

These are all normal parts of the healing process.

Avoid scratching, picking, or over-moisturizing the tattoo, as this can affect the final appearance of the tattoo.

Traditional Tattoo Aftercare (Artist Recommended Cream)

If your tattoo is covered with a traditional bandage instead of a second skin, follow these steps:

Step 1: Remove the Bandage

Leave the bandage on for 2–4 hours after your tattoo appointment unless instructed otherwise by your artist.

Once removed, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild fragrance-free antibacterial soap.

Do not scrub the tattoo. Simply wash gently with clean hands.

Step 2: Clean the Tattoo

Pat the tattoo dry using a clean paper towel. Do not use cloth towels as they may carry bacteria.

Allow the tattoo to air dry for several minutes before applying any ointment.

Step 3: Apply Artist Recommended Tattoo Cream

Apply a very thin layer of the cream recommended by your artist.

Common professional tattoo aftercare creams include products designed to:

• Keep the tattoo moisturized

• Support skin healing

• Prevent excessive dryness

Use only a small amount of cream. Applying too much can suffocate the skin and slow healing.

Repeat this process 2–3 times per day for the first 5–7 days.

Step 4: Switch to Lotion

After the first week, switch to a light fragrance-free lotion to keep the tattoo hydrated as it finishes healing.

Continue moisturizing lightly until the tattoo is fully healed.

Tattoo Aftercare Using Second Skin (Tegaderm / Derm Shield)

Many artists at Tattoo Avenue use a protective second skin bandage such as Tegaderm. This medical-grade adhesive bandage protects the tattoo while it begins the healing process.

Step 1: Leave the Second Skin On

Leave the second skin bandage on for 3–5 days, unless instructed otherwise by your tattoo artist.

During this time you may notice:

• Ink

• Plasma

• Fluid buildup under the bandage

This is completely normal and part of the healing process.

Do not puncture or remove the bandage early unless it becomes damaged or starts leaking.

Step 2: Removing the Second Skin

After 3–5 days, remove the bandage slowly while in the shower using warm water.

Peel it back gently in the direction of hair growth. Do not rip it off quickly.

Step 3: Wash the Tattoo

Once the bandage is removed:

Wash the tattoo gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free antibacterial soap.

Pat dry with a clean paper towel and allow the tattoo to air dry.

Step 4: Moisturize the Tattoo

After removing the second skin bandage, begin applying a light layer of artist recommended tattoo cream or fragrance-free lotion.

Apply 2–3 times daily for the remainder of the healing process.

Things to Avoid During Tattoo Healing

To protect your tattoo while it heals, avoid the following:

• Swimming pools

• Hot tubs

• Baths or soaking the tattoo

• Direct sun exposure

• Tight clothing rubbing against the tattoo

• Scratching or picking at peeling skin

Showers are perfectly fine, but avoid prolonged soaking.

Signs of Normal Healing

During healing, you may notice:

• Peeling skin similar to a mild sunburn

• Light flaking

• Itching

This is normal and part of the body’s natural healing process.

Never pick or scratch the tattoo while it heals.

When to Contact Your Tattoo Artist

If you experience unusual symptoms such as:

• Excessive swelling

• Severe redness spreading outward

• Pus or unusual discharge

• Fever

Contact your tattoo artist or a medical professional.

These symptoms are uncommon but should be addressed quickly if they occur.
